Are you afraid of sequels? There were times when I couldn’t wait for the next installment of my favorite game only to end up feeling disappointed because it didn’t rise to my expectations. Fortunately, that is not the case with Warhammer: Vermintide 2. The guys from Fatshark did an excellent job and managed to keep everything that was good while adding just the right dosage of fresh features.
It Doesn’t Matter If You Played the Original
The game picks up right where its predecessor ended. Your hero is held captive to be sacrificed in a ritual, and you need to run from a mine that is infested with rats. You will soon realize that this is a tutorial that will help you learn the mechanics of the game. During it, you will also free other protagonists from captivity. The developers made a fantastic move here as it will help players who haven’t played the first part of the franchise to figure out what the hell is going on.
The plot is okay, too, but it’s the way it is told that impressed me. You can expect a lot of action and fighting in Warhammer: Vermintide 2. That is why it’s vital that the storytelling doesn’t get in the way of it. But WH: V2 excellently uses all characters. Dialogs are also nicely implemented, and most of them take place during loading screens or fighting itself.
Advanced Classes for Advanced Combat
We mentioned fighting, so let’s talk about it some more. Compared to the first Vermintide, you will have a bunch of new weapons at your disposal. That adds to the combat experience, but it’s the new class system that makes things exciting.
Each of the main heroes has several advanced classes. You can think of them as subcategories. The trick is that you can change these advanced classes from one mission to another. However, keep in mind that each of them can be upgraded, which means you can also focus on a single subclass.
The changes made to crafting are also significant. Some people didn’t appreciate the crafting feature in the first installment. However, with the changed mechanics, you can enjoy crafting items now. Aside from that, you should know that it is vital to crafting some stuff if you want to progress in the game.
Nothing Beats Playing with Teammates
The co-op feature is the core of Vermintide 2. The good news is that you can join a session that is already in progress. If there are not enough people to start a game or a player leaves at any moment, AI takes over. And the computer-controlled teammates do an excellent job, which means you probably won’t notice the difference. Truth to be told, they are not perfect, and they will make some errors in judgment occasionally, but I guess that could also be said for human teammates. You can communicate with your squad members via hotkeys, but nothing beats actually talking to them. VOIP is a built-in feature in this game, which means that you only need a microphone to get things started.
