Desolate is a debut game from the Nearga studio and an ambitious project to create a survival horror action range with Resident Evil and Outlast. It has only recently entered the early access phase, which means that you can expect improvements down the road. However, we fastened our seatbelts and got ready for an exciting ride to see what we can expect from this release.
What Happened on Granichny Island?
The year is somewhere around 1980, and you are located in the Soviet Union. The Island of Granichny was the location of a massive disaster that has been covered up by the corporation called the New Light. You will be playing as one of the Volunteers. These are the people that were sent to the island to uncover its secrets and stay alive.
The island you will explore is a vast open world with lots of things to do. You will encounter military bases that were abandoned, as well as settlements where people used to live. However, you will also discover (government?) facilities that were considered to be top secret. We wouldn’t want to ruin things with spoilers, but let’s say that there are a lot of secrets waiting to be discovered. The crucial element will be information from the diaries that the people who used to live on the island left. However, if you plan to reveal the mystery behind Granichny, you will need to stay alive, and that will not be a simple task.
Do You Need Some Help?
The crucial thing in Desolate will be to keep the head on your shoulders. That will be a tricky thing to do since you will be battling foes from several categories. That includes your classic monsters and creatures that emerged after the disaster, soldiers that were turned into zombies, as well as human marauders who also want all the worst for you. Once again gathering information can play the vital role. As you play, you will learn more against the potential opponents. If you know their weak spots, your chances of surviving increase.
In case you think you might use a helping hand, you can utilize the co-op features. It allows up to four players to play together against the enemies. There is no doubt that the extra numbers are useful in battles, but you also have special abilities to use, such as the option to revive the teammate that was killed.
Are You Going Mad?
You will need to work on yourself and improving your skills if you want to survive. You can craft various equipment and weapons, as well as create recipes that will enhance your abilities. The events on the island will also affect your mental state, which is something you need to take care of, too.
The graphics look impressive. You will explore caves, forests, and other fantastic scenery while you are fighting the residents of Granichny. There are some glitches here and there, but that is understandable for an early access game. Also, we would appreciate seeing better AI as this one does not represent a challenge at the moment.
