Ever since I found out that they can carry up to 50 times their body weight, I have a weird respect for ants. It seems that the people from Slug Disco Studios think the same since they decided to use ants as main protagonists of their new game Empires of the Undergrowth. The good news is that this is not a rip off of the SimAnt. In fact, this release has a lot to offer if you are up for an ant colony management game.
Everything Starts in a Laboratory
Two scientists have created a formicarium and started observing the ant colony that you will lead. You might like them at first, but you will soon find out that they are not good people. In fact, they have unique challenges for your colony, and they don’t care whether you will survive. Aside from the challenges that you can take on whenever you want to, there are also missions to complete. At the moment, there are only four missions. However, keep mind that Empires of the Undergrowth is an early access game, which means we can probably expect more.
The first mission had a straightforward task – demolish everything in your way. However, how can you do that without an army? Black ants can do the dirty work of killing for you, but you need to secure them food. That is why you will also need ant workers. Their primary task is digging and finding bugs and other creatures that can be eaten. They can also construct new nests, which will enable you to increase the population of your ant colony.
Fight and Learn at the Same Time
I have to admit that black ants are incredibly brave. In fact, they can even fight larger enemies and come out victorious. Of course, that won’t happen all the time. The narrator that is watching over the colony might help you with useful tips. For example, after defeating a species of beetle, I found out that my army won because they were children. If they were adult bugs, my ants would have lost.
The narrator will also present every enemy to you. He is aware that you probably don’t want to bother remembering its scientific name, which is why he also uses the layman’s terms for names of species. Regardless of that, all information provided in the game is accurate. It was interesting to find out a bit more about the remarkable world of ants and other creatures. If you are a fan of Discovery of Animal Planet, you will undoubtedly love this.
As you complete the mission, you will be rewarded with possibilities to improve your colony. When you feel like you are ready, you can take on a challenge. Keep in mind that you will need balanced upgrading, which means that improving only workers probably won’t help you.
