The advancement of technology brought a bunch of complex games across different genres. However, we still love releases that take us back to the time of 2D platformers ideal for an evening of relaxation. Seasons after Fall is one of those games and, while it has its flaws, a nice addition to the genre. It offers engaging puzzles and a nice visual presentation packed into a single product that is worth trying.
Discover the Secrets of the Magic Forest
The beginning of the story sees a spirit called “The Seed of the Forest” possessing a fox because it needs a physical form to perform the Ritual of the Seasons. You don’t know much about that, but you agree to help. Unfortunately, the ritual fails and results in the spirit and the fox separating its ways. One of the guardians notices that things have gone sideways. He asks you, the fox, to find the Seed and discover the truth. To do that, you need to explore the magic forest and gather a bunch of items.
The plot of the Seasons after Fall tries to deliver some meaningful lessons. However, it keeps things simple without going in too deep. The game can be completed in less than ten hours. In fact, you can finish it in double less time if you choose to skip looking for hidden areas with extra details related to the story. The problem is that some crucial elements are concealed. Although you can progress without them, they bring depth to the story, and it’s a shame that authors didn’t insist on including them in the ‘main’ plot, too.
Choose Your Season
As for the gameplay, Seasons after Fall is a classic 2D Metroidvania-style platformer. You will get to take the cute fox across four areas which are nicely designed. The graphics are beautiful, and the visual presentation is impressive, as well as the soundtrack. You can see that the developers put great effort into this game. However, you will need to visit each area at least a couple of times because of the new paths that opened in the meantime. While we did expect some backtracking, there is a lot of it in this game, so things tend to get a bit repetitive.
However, the puzzles are incredibly fun and no doubt the best part of the Seasons after Fall. The guardians left you with the ability to change the season in the forest whenever you want. That means that you can choose between Spring, Summer, Fall, or Winter at any time. Most of the puzzles that you will do require using the environment to your advantage. For example, if you need to get across the lake, switch to winter and freeze it. The concept is engaging and stimulates creativity, which is why the lovers of puzzles will love it.
