There was a franchise called Diablo that rocked the RPG world to its core. Its immense popularity is probably what made action role-playing games so popular. Crate Entertainment is not a big or famous studio. In fact, they are independent developers, but they know a thing or two about gaming. I’m saying that because their debut game Grim Dawn succeeded in being a decent addition to the genre that fans will enjoy.
Follow the Story or Just Fight
It’s not every day you encounter an action RPG with an intriguing plot. We are used to the storylines being slim, but that is not the case here. The game is set in a post-apocalyptic world where everything looks so dark that you wonder if it’s worth saving. Your character starts by being trapped to a tree. However, you soon find a way to get yourself free and you set on an adventure to find out what’s going with the world. The plot is told through books and notes and you don’t have to dedicate much time to it. If you prefer hacking and slashing, feel free to do that. Grim Dawn offers players a choice to play the game however they feel fit.
Once you choose the sex of your character, you begin with a shield and a sword. However, you will quickly find many other weapons, such as hammers, pistols, and rifles. You can choose from one of six classes – Occultist, Shaman, Arcanist, Demolitionist, Soldier, and Nightblade. Once you upgrade to level ten, you can choose another class for extra opportunities.
Devotion, Reputation, and Combat
Thanks to a bunch of items you will find, you can build you character any way you want. Pay attention to the Devotion system. It enables you to invest sacred shrines you find in constellations of star signs, which will further shape your hero. In Grim Dawn, every choice matters. You need to think carefully because your decision may cause an innocent to die or allow you to skip a portion of the story. Reputation points also play a vital role. It’s crucial to have a positive relationship with various factions. However, getting close to one of them will lead to negative reputation with another, so choose carefully.
Combat is intriguing and not repetitive at all. The monsters you will face vary, as well as their AI, but they will be challenging rivals on most occasions. You can choose the desired difficulty between normal and veteran. Once you complete the game on veteran difficulty, you will unlock Elite and Ultimate settings, which I recommend only for hardcore fans.
As for the graphics, you are playing in a world destroyed by the apocalypse and you are aware of it every second of your way. The visuals are dark, as well as the music, which complements the atmosphere.
